A Heat Pump Works Year-Round, So It Can Fail Year-Round
An AC rests all winter. A Phoenix heat pump does not: it cools 7+ months a year and then runs in reverse to heat through December and January. That means more run hours, and two sets of failures: the cooling-side parts every Valley AC wears out, plus the heat-side parts an AC does not have, like the reversing valve and the defrost controls. Maricopa Air has repaired heat pumps across the Valley since 1975, and most of the homes we work on in Scottsdale and Phoenix run one.

What Happens on a Service Call
Two-hour arrival window
We text when the tech is on the way.
Diagnostic walk
Thermostat, electrical, refrigerant pressures in the mode that is failing, reversing valve operation, defrost board and sensor, backup heat strips, outdoor and indoor coils, blower, filter, and airflow. We check the whole system, even after we find the first problem.
The fault, the cost, your options
Written on the spot.
The repair
Done that visit when we can. Most capacitors, contactors, fan motors, defrost sensors, and reversing valve coils are on the truck.
Verification
We run the system in heat and in cool before we leave, and check pressures, temperatures, and airflow in both. You see the numbers.
While you wait for the tech: If the outdoor unit is buried in ice that does not clear within about 30 minutes, or you smell burning, shut the system off at the thermostat. A few minutes of steam from the outdoor unit on a cold morning is a normal defrost cycle, not a breakdown. In summer, if anyone shows signs of heat illness, call 911 first, then us.

Common Heat Pump Failures in Phoenix Homes, and What They Mean
After more than 50 years in this climate, we see the same handful of heat pump failures every year. Some show up in July, some on the first cold morning.
Reversing valve stuck or failed.
The valve that switches the system between heating and cooling. Symptom: the system is stuck in one mode, like cool air on the heat setting. Sometimes it is only the solenoid coil, which is a quick fix. A failed valve body is a bigger repair, and on an older unit it is often the point where replacement makes more sense.
Defrost control or sensor failure.
In cold, damp weather the outdoor coil frosts over, and the unit should defrost itself every so often. If the board or sensor fails, the coil ices solid and heat output drops off. Usually repaired the same visit.
Blown capacitor or failed contactor.
Phoenix heat-cycling wears these out faster than almost anywhere, and a heat pump runs them in both seasons. Symptom: outdoor unit hums but will not start, or is completely dead. Usually repaired the same visit.
Low refrigerant from a leak.
Weak cooling in summer and weak heating in winter, longer run times, sometimes ice on the lines. We pressure-test, locate and repair the leak, then recharge. A recharge without fixing the leak only buys time.
Backup heat strips or sequencer out.
The electric backup heat that helps on the coldest mornings. Symptom: the house never quite reaches temperature on cold nights, or “AUX” stays lit and the electric bill jumps.
Outdoor fan motor failure.
Bearings and windings worn down by rooftop and exterior heat. Symptom: outdoor unit running but the fan is not, high-pressure trips in summer, poor defrost in winter.
Compressor failure.
The expensive end of ignored airflow, pressure, or electrical problems. We confirm it with testing before we call it, and we show you the repair-or-replace math on site.

Repair or Replace?
If the math points to repair, we repair. If it points to replacement, we say so. As a rule of thumb, a single-component fault on a heat pump under 10 years old is a repair. A failed compressor or reversing valve body on an older unit usually is not. We run the numbers with you on site: repair cost, system age, remaining lifespan, and what a replacement quote would look like.

Heat Pump Repair FAQs
Why is my heat pump blowing cold air on the heat setting?
It may be in a defrost cycle, which is normal and lasts a few minutes. If it keeps blowing cool air for more than 15 minutes, the usual causes are a reversing valve or solenoid stuck in cooling, a defrost fault, or low refrigerant. We pin down which one on site.
Why is my heat pump blowing warm air in summer?
Usually a failed capacitor, a dead outdoor fan motor, low refrigerant, or a dirty outdoor coil. Shut it off at the thermostat if it keeps running without cooling, because running it that way can damage the compressor. Then call us.
My heat pump is covered in ice. Is that normal?
A light frost that clears on the defrost cycle is normal on cold, damp mornings. Heavy ice that does not clear points to a defrost control fault, low refrigerant, or an airflow problem. Shut it off at the thermostat and call us.
Why is steam coming off the outdoor unit?
That is almost always a normal defrost cycle. The unit is melting frost off the outdoor coil, and the meltwater steams in cold air. It should stop within about 10 minutes.
What is a reversing valve?
The part that switches a heat pump between heating and cooling. When it sticks, the system gets locked in one mode. It is one of the most common heat-pump-specific repairs we make.
Should I repair or replace my heat pump?
A single-component fault on a unit under 10 years old is almost always a repair. A failed compressor or reversing valve body on an older unit usually points to replacement. We show you the math on site before you decide.
How much does heat pump repair cost?
It depends on the fault, and we do not guess over the phone. Every visit starts with a diagnostic, and you get the total repair cost in writing before any work starts.
Do you work on all brands?
Yes. We are manufacturer trained on American Standard and Goodman, and we service every major residential brand.
Is there a warranty on the repair?
Yes. Parts carry the manufacturer warranty. Our workmanship warranty on the repair itself is one year.
Do you offer financing on repairs?
Yes, on qualifying repairs. Financing is available through Wisetack. See financing options →
